Monday May 31, 2010 - Jackson, Wyoming

Today was our typical settling day in our new location. Laundry, school-work, and other mundane but necessary things filled the day. We were thrilled to have an actual washer and dryer in our condo, rather than having to use pay ones in a central location or off-site. Much more convenient and faster as well.

It's wonderful to be cooking all our meals again after a few days of pseudo-camping. The kitchen is better equipped than any of the other condos we've stayed at, which makes things that much easier. We didn't get out and do anything today, but that's ok. As we've said before, the days of normal routine become the blessing and the rejuvenation in a wandering life. We're grateful for a place to call home for more than a night or a few days, and the opportunity to be together as a family doing the things that we would consider boring in a more settled arrangement.

The kids & Gena are doing well with their colds overall, but there's still some coughing - particularly at night when they're lying down. I've thus far escaped the worst of it, though during an outing to the grocery store this evening I worried that I was going to get hit with a fever. Fortunately it passed by the end of the evening.

The disappointment for today was the evening's entertainment. Lily had told us about a hootenanny that took place regularly in town. We were excited to go and give the kids another musical experience like the one they had in New Hampshire. We arrived extra early as Lily had suggested, but the place was still packed. So tightly that the few tables they had were all full. There was no way we'd be able to feed the kids here and listen to the music. Reluctantly we admitted defeat and left.

We found a local pizza place instead, since the kids had been primed for that sort of dinner. The fun here was that Caedmon decided to throw a fit. Gena had to take him outside and sit with him for probably 20 minutes until he was willing to apologize for his behavior. It's funny to see, but important to deal with. He has a stubborn streak, and you can see when he sets his jaw that he's not going to go without a fight. I was proud of Gena's tenacity (and of his, though applied improperly!). In the end we were all able to enjoy pizza together in good spirits.

The big plan for tomorrow is having Lily over for dinner. We've decided to do a Mexican meal. The only problem is that the produce section at the local Albertson's looked like it had been ransacked by a marauding army. No cilantro, no avocados, and many other more traditional items were nearly gone as well. Hopefully they'll be restocked tomorrow. It gives us pause to remember what an amazing - and potentially precarious - arrangement it is whereby we can choose for a broad varieties of foods that aren't grown locally and have to be trucked in somehow. It makes me even more committed to becoming better at learning how to supplement our diet with a garden and other options once we're resettled.

For now, I'll enjoy the basic trust that by tomorrow the trucks will have arrived and we'll have everything we'd like to for dinner.
